Lake Highlands Boys Come Through Against Neighborhood Rivals

April 7, 2017 By Barron Hobbs Leave a Comment

Richardson seniors Caleb Combs and Grant Dodgen wreaked havoc in their own backyard as they helped the Eagles pull out a 3-1 win Tuesday night at RISD rivals Lake Highlands.  Both Combs and Dodgen have lived in Lake Highlands since birth, grew up rooting for the Wildcats, and the pair went into the game with something to prove against their neighborhood rivals.

After a 25 min lightening delay before the start of the game, the Wildcats took an early 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning on a wild pitch.  But Sr P Caleb Combs dug deep and shut Lake Highlands down in his final start against his neighborhood school. Jr OF Will Duncan got the Eagles going offensively in the top of the 2nd with lead off double to center field and tied the game on wild pitch later in the inning.

Both pitchers settled down until Sr OF Grant Dodgen gave Lake Highlands another reminder of the athlete they let get away. Dodgen's laser liner down the 1B line scored Jr Caden Kirk.  Dodgen also had his hand in scoring the 2nd run in the inning getting caught in a 1st & 3rd rundown scoring Frosh Luke Mulvey before eventually swiping 2B.

Combs towered above the contest, dominating Lake Highlands hitters with a three-hitter and yielding only a single run.  Time and again the Northern Oklahoma commit loaded up his fastball and simply blew it by the hapless Wildcats.  It was his most accurate performance of the season, working out of 2 bases loaded jams late in the ball game.

Base knocks by Sr Esteban Cardoza, Jr James Monroe, and Jr Mark Mercer kept the Eagles on the bases and pressure on the Wildcats. Jr P Dan Wood got the ball in the bottom of the 6th and quickly shut the door on the Wildcats for the save. The two teams will conclude the season series on Friday at the Nest with an early 5pm game time start. #PurpleReign #enoughisnotenough
